What is the difference between waterproof boots and snow boots?
Since 1962, Sorel has been at the forefront of manufacturing exceptional, high-quality winter footwear. With our heritage in Canada – a country celebrated for its varied winter weather – we have developed unparalleled expertise and knowledge of inclement conditions.
Our collection of snow boots for women, as well as our waterproof boot selection, both deliver premium protection for a range of conditions. Sorel ensures that every pair we make demonstrates our unwavering dedication to durable, function-first fashion.
While there are many differences between the two types, there are also many similarities. Find out the purpose of each style, as well as the insulation and waterproofing protection they offer.
Purpose
As their names suggest, waterproof boots and snow boots are different types of footwear.
Sorel's experienced designers create waterproof boots to protect against wet weather and water ingress. There is no requirement for them to include insulation. We design snow boots for snowy conditions, ensuring they are almost always insulated and waterproof.
Both styles can feature different upper heights depending on preference and need. However, the height of some women’s snow boots will be taller for use in deep, heavy snow.
Warmth
Sorel’s snow boots offer ample warmth to keep the cold out. Fortunately, so do many of our waterproof boots. Boots that feature insulation are purposely designed to keep the heat in.
The warmth of snow boots, as well as their waterproof counterparts, is determined by the amount of insulation they provide.
Many models within our collection provide 100g – 300g of built-in insulation. 100g is ideal for running errands and milder temperatures. 200g – 300g is great for colder temperatures and longer periods outside. The more insulation, the warmer the pair.
Other options include 6mm – 9mm removable felt liners. You can buy these liners separately to adjust the amount of warmth needed.
If you plan on a winter adventure or a snowy ski holiday, ensure the pair you choose includes suitable protection against freezing temperatures. This will help to keep your feet warm. Waterproof boots with minimal insulation will suit those expecting a steady temperature above freezing.
Waterproofing
Winter often brings rain and soggy conditions. Both style of boot features excellent resistance against water ingress.
Sorel makes the uppers used in each type of boot from waterproof materials. We use natural fabrics like leather and suede, which are inherently waterproof. We also use synthetic waterproof options like nylon and canvas.
Many of the outsoles of our winter footwear feature top waterproofing designs. In many styles, we use handcrafted, vulcanised, waterproof rubber (the same material used in some dry suits). Other models deliver a moulded rubber outsole with seam-sealed construction. Some options include our OutDry™ membrane that ensures breathable, waterproof protection.
Both our waterproof and snow boot collections feature water-repellent technology. Your feet will stay dry in all conditions, ensuring comfort in every step.
Grip
Our waterproof footwear and our slip-resistant snow boots provide ample stability on uneven, slippery terrain. Look for models that feature our DUOTREAD™ outsole. It is ideal for both wet and dry conditions. For our most exceptional grip on uneven terrain, opt for our EVERTREAD™ rubber outsole.
Many of our sole treads include a rubber herringbone design outsole. Others deliver our Sorel aero-trac non-loading outsole or our multi-directional lug outsole. All tread designs provide the best traction and stability on slippery surfaces.
Style
As with all Sorel’s footwear, we deliver plenty of style with every pair. Both our waterproof and snow boot options provide a range of styles and colours to choose from. Our footwear comes in traditional colours, as well as more bold and unique options. You can also select different upper heights, depending on your requirements. We feature ankle-height, mid-height and tall. Try our lace-up options for more support and stability. Are you in a hurry? Opt for our slip-on models. Whichever type or style of boot you choose, you can have confidence that it is the premium quality you have come to expect from Sorel.
