How warm are snow boots supposed to be?

For over 60 years, Sorel has manufactured premium winter footwear. Our Canadian origins have provided us with experience and expertise to create snow boots that deliver function-first fashion.

Sorelā€™s snow boots for women, and the whole family, are designed with warmth in mind. We understand that protecting your feet against winterā€™s elements is essential. Keeping the cold out is crucial to your comfort.

How warm a snow boot is meant to be depends on how much insulation it contains. Sorel offers a range of options to provide varying levels of warmth to suit your needs. We also ensure that each pair of snow boots delivers excellent waterproof protection, grip and style.

Whether you are looking for a pair to commute between home and work or for aprĆØs ski, discover how much insulation you need. You will also learn about the other necessary features our extensive selection of winter footwear offers.

Built-in insulation

Different types and amounts of insulation deliver different levels of warmth. Sorelā€™s winter footwear collection provides a range of insulation options to keep your feet warm, including our built-in insulation.

Some of our models include 100g of built-in insulation. 100g is perfect for short trips around urban areas and for those who will not be outside for long periods ā€“ think commuting between home, car and work. This amount of insulation is lightweight and breathable, allowing for all-day wear both indoors and out. 100g is ideal for temperatures that will reach approximately -20Ā°C. Winter often brings erratic weather. If the temperature makes an uncharacteristic drop, add a pair of thick socks until it returns to normal.

Other options provide 200g ā€“ 300g of built-in insulation. This amount of insulation is great for longer periods outside, hiking or walking. If you plan on spending time outside while stationary, opt for 300g of insulation for added warmth to keep your toes toasty. The 200g ā€“ 300g insulation temperature rating is approximately -32Ā°C.

Boot liners

Alternatively, some of our styles offer 6mm and 9mm thick, removable linings. These liners are made from recycled felt and are washable. They have been expertly designed to keep the heat in and the cold out. They are temperature rated to approximately -32Ā°C.

The 6mm liner is thinner, ideal for slightly milder weather. Opt for our 6mm liner if you anticipate an activity that requires more movement.

On the other hand, the 9mm liner is thicker, making it ideal for more frigid temperatures. If you plan on a more stationary outdoor activity or being outside longer, choose the 9mm liner.

Sorelā€™s boot liners, available for the whole family, can be purchased separately. The cosy liners can easily be swapped out and changed to give you the amount of warmth you need to enjoy all of winterā€™s elements.

Waterproof protection

Dry feet are warm feet. No matter how much insulation your snow boots deliver, your feet must also stay dry to keep them warm and comfortable. Fortunately, Sorelā€™s winter footwear also offers superb water resistance for all winterā€™s wet conditions.

Many of our models feature moulded rubber outsoles with seam-sealed construction. For ultimate waterproof protection, opt for styles made with handcrafted, vulcanised, waterproof rubber outsoles ā€“ the same material used in some dry suits.

Other features

While warmth and protection against water are a top priority for snow boots, you must also consider the traction they offer. Once temperatures plummet, ice inevitably begins to form. The sole of each pair features superb grip for slippery surfaces.

Our slip-resistant snow boots use various tread systems to deliver stability and safety. For excellent protection, many of our models include a herringbone-design outsole. Others include Sorel aero-trac non-loading outsoles or multi-directional lug outsoles.

The height of womenā€™s snow boots should also be a consideration when looking for the perfect pair. Taller uppers will protect your legs in deep snow, helping to keep them warm. Our waterproof uppers come in natural materials like suede and leather, as well as synthetic fabrics like nylon and canvas. Some of our winter footwear also features cuffs and collars on the uppers. These help to retain heat around the leg and prevent snow from sneaking down the top of the boots.
