What is the difference between snow boots and winter boots?
Many people will assume that snow and winter boots are the same thing. Yet, there are several differences you should consider when purchasing your winter footwear. Sorel offers both types with the best features for your needs.
Sorel has designed winter footwear since 1962. Our foundations in Canada have given us insight, expertise and experience with all types of winter weather. We understand what your feet need for snow-based winter activities. We also know what they need for urban areas. Our knowledge of wintry conditions allows us to create function-first footwear that never compromises style.
Discover which footwear is best suited for your needs. Understand the purpose of each type of boot, as well as the insulation, waterproofing and grip offered in each style.
Purpose
The key difference between the two types of winter footwear is evident by their names. Snow boots are created for use in snow. Winter boots are more suitable for general winter use, particularly in urban areas.
Snow boots typically feature higher uppers than their winter boot counterpart. A higher upper offers more protection for deep snow. Sorel’s uppers are made from premium materials. Some models feature natural fabrics, like leather or suede. Other styles include synthetic fabrics like nylon or canvas. Whether you predict plenty of flurries or are planning a snowy ski holiday, ensure you choose a pair suitable for heavy snowfall.
Winter boots can feature shorter uppers. They are not intended for adventures that involve substantial snowfall. Shorter uppers (made from the same high-quality materials as above) are also lighter. This allows for longer all-day wear.

Warmth
Snow boots usually deliver the warmest insulation against cold temperatures. Sorel offers excellent warmth in both types of boots. We do this to ensure comfort throughout the winter.
Our winter footwear collection features a range of options to keep you warm. Many include 100g – 300g of built-in fleece insulation. Other models offer 6mm – 9mm thick, removable felt liners. If you spend less time outside or foresee milder temperatures, choose a style with less insulation. For colder temperatures, choose heavier insulation.
Whatever level of insulation you choose, rest assured that the warmth of our snow boots and winter boots is breathable, so moisture from toasty toes can escape.
Waterproofing
Wet weather is unavoidable during the winter season. Sorel ensures that all our winter footwear offers some level of water resistance so your feet can stay dry.
Our selection of winter footwear offers ample waterproof protection against winter’s harsh precipitation. Many of our models feature seam-sealed construction with moulded rubber outsoles. For particularly wet conditions, discover our line of footwear that includes handcrafted, vulcanised, waterproof rubber outsoles – the same material used to manufacture some dry suits.
The natural and synthetic fabrics used in the construction of Sorel’s uppers also protect against water ingress.
Grip
Each sole found within Sorel’s winter footwear features superb traction. The soles offer premium grip on icy surfaces. Whether you embark on a winter hiking adventure or are commuting from home to work, your safety is of the utmost importance. The majority of our footwear features protection against ice and other slippery surfaces.
Many of our models feature EVERTREAD™. This outsole is a high-traction rubber. It has been engineered for our most outstanding grip on multi-terrain surfaces. Some models have DUOTREAD™, which has been engineered for excellent traction on both wet and dry surfaces. Other models include a herringbone design outsole or a multi-directional lug outsole for enhanced traction.

Understanding your requirements will help you select the perfect pair for snowy adventures, general winter use and everything in between.
