What's the best type of waterproofing for women's snow boots?

For six decades, Sorel has manufactured high-quality, premium winter footwear. Our brand began in Canada, allowing us to experience all winter’s inclement weather. Through this hands-on exposure, we have developed valuable knowledge. We apply our expertise to every pair in our collection of snow boots for women.

We understand that a snow boot must have several qualities. They must be warm, waterproof, comfortable and stylish. Sorel winter footwear offers them all because winter weather brings more than snow. It also brings wet, soggy conditions. Great waterproofing protection is standard, as is premium warmth, comfort, safety and style.

Uppers

The height of women’s snow boots is determined by how high the uppers (sometimes referred to as the shaft height) are. Sorel offers ankle and bootie-height, mid-height and tall options for premium waterproof safeguarding.

Sorel uses natural and synthetic materials in our women’s snow boots to manufacture our uppers. Both options are waterproof and provide excellent protection and style.

We typically make our natural uppers from leather, suede or nubuck, which are all inherently waterproof. Natural materials are hard-wearing and long-lasting. They are also heavier than their synthetic counterparts. They also give a traditional look to your boots, ensuring you can wear them season after season.

Our synthetic uppers are often available in nylon or canvas. Our synthetic options are lightweight and easy to clean. They also come in a wide variety of colours.

Whichever height or material you choose, you can rest assured that our uppers bring superior water-resistant defence.

Outsoles

Discover how the outsoles of our women’s snow boots show our unparalleled waterproof technology.

We manufacture many of our boots with seam-sealed construction. We mould the sole to the rest of the shoe. It is not just stuck together with glue. This method ensures no water ingress on soggy days.

Some models feature our handcrafted, waterproof, vulcanised rubber outsole - the same rubber used to make some dry suits. These styles provide exceptional protection and durability.

Other options include a moulded rubber cupsole construction. A cupsole is a type of outsole made from a single piece of rubber. It “cups” the upper and provides unbeatable protection against water.

Many styles provide a PU (polyurethane) coated leather mudguard and heel overlay. This ensures a strip of PU is attached to the upper above the sole for an extra layer of protection against water.

Other essential features

Waterproof protection is important for snow boots. You should also consider other essential features. When buying a new pair, think about warmth and grip.

Winter weather ensures a drop in the temperature. Any footwear you buy should be well insulated. Sorel’s collection delivers plenty of comfort and warmth for your feet by keeping heat in and cold out.

Our styles offer 100g – 300g of built-in insulation, usually with a fleece lining. 100g is ideal for milder winter temperatures and brief trips outside. For more protection against chilly conditions, opt for a pair with 200g – 300g of insulation. These styles are perfect for activities like hiking.

Other options include 6mm – 9mm removable felt liners. These liners are also available separately, providing more versatility. Boots with liners are ideal for heavy snow and extended periods spent outdoors.

Another feature to consider is traction. Winter will usher in freezing temperatures and ice. Sorel’s slip-resistant snow boots are designed to provide enhanced traction and great stability on slippery surfaces. Many of our styles include multi-directional lug outsoles or Sorel aero-trac non-loading outsoles. Others use a herringbone-design outsole or our EVERTREADTM outsole.

Sorel’s dedication to quality, durable footwear is evident in every pair. We ensure that every shoe and boot we produce provides the style, protection and value you have come to expect from us. With over 60 years of experience, you can trust that our snow boots offer the waterproofing technology you can rely on.
